OpenAI shipped its best product and its least flattering number in the same 24 hours, and the market only priced one of them.
Bitcoin barely moved, down 0.22%, while the Nasdaq fell 1.25% on the OpenAI news. Gold took the nervous money instead, and the 10-year eased to 5.23% once the Iran risk faded.
OpenAI shipped GPT-6 to everyone, then Wall Street recounted its revenue
Two OpenAI stories landed a day apart. On Wednesday it rolled out GPT-6 across ChatGPT, with free users getting a lighter version on Thursday. Then the Financial Times reported that OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was nearing $50 billion, not the $70 billion that had been widely reported. The Nasdaq fell 1.25%, its worst day since mid-August.
Start with the product. GPT-6's headline feature is Intelligent UI: instead of a wall of text, ChatGPT can answer with buttons, forms, charts and small working tools, like a bill splitter or a savings calculator. The revenue gap is mostly about counting. When customers buy OpenAI's models through a cloud partner, OpenAI books only its cut. Anthropic counts the whole sale, and investors had stretched OpenAI's number to match. Same kind of business, two rulers.
The market didn't sell because OpenAI is shrinking. It told investors revenue grew more than 70% in the period. It sold because one private company's number holds up a lot of public stock prices. Oracle fell 5.5% and Nvidia 2.9%, per CNN. "This has become a much narrower market that's dependent on the AI names to keep it afloat," Baird's Ross Mayfield told CNN.
The second-order read: the product is improving faster than the revenue is getting clear. GPT-6 turns ChatGPT from a place you ask into a place you do things. Every calculator it builds on the spot, for free, is one a website or a template used to own.
Why it mattersThe most-used AI app now builds the simple tools people used to search for, and the market just learned how much of the AI trade rests on one company's revenue math.
If your site, template or app is a calculator, converter or simple planner, ChatGPT can now make a version in seconds. That's your new competitor. Sell what a generated tool can't carry: your data, saved history, judgment and audience. And when you quote your own revenue, say whether it's gross or net.
AI stocks now trade on a private company's disclosures, and a counting method moved a $20 billion number in a day. The business didn't change overnight, which is the point: much of the AI trade is priced on figures holders can't see. Watch the chip and cloud earnings later this month for whether the demand story holds.

- MACRO + GEOPOLITICSTrump takes an Iran strike off the table until the midterms, and yields ease
Oil and bond yields spent Thursday morning climbing on Iran fears, with Brent near $106. Then the President posted that the US won't attack Iran before the November 3 midterms and called talks with Tehran productive. Treasury yields fell to their lowest since last Friday. Oil kept most of its gains and closed up 4%, because tanker traffic through Hormuz is still a trickle. Cheaper money, still-expensive energy.

- BITCOINBitcoin ETFs bled for a second day, and bitcoin barely noticed
US spot bitcoin ETFs lost a net $244 million on Thursday. Fidelity's FBTC did most of it, about $197 million, and Franklin's fund was the only one taking money in. That's two straight days of selling. Yet bitcoin slipped just 0.22% over 24 hours while the Nasdaq dropped. When the funds sell and the price holds, the buying is coming from somewhere else.

- CRYPTOSamsung puts USDC on Solana inside 82 million Galaxy phones
Starting the last week of October, Samsung Wallet will send USDC across borders on Solana, with built-in ramps to and from regular dollars. It launches in the US on 82 million Galaxy devices, with other markets to follow as regulators allow. Users won't need a separate crypto app, and Samsung hasn't published fees. If overseas clients pay you, a digital dollar is about to sit next to your debit card.

- ROBOTS + FUTURE TECHWaymo borrows $5 billion, its first time taking on debt
Waymo closed a $5 billion loan from lenders including Blackstone, PIMCO and Apollo. It's the first time the Alphabet unit has borrowed instead of selling shares. The money funds growth beyond its current 15 markets, with London and Tokyo next. Lenders write checks this size against revenue they can see. Robotaxis just moved from science project to something bond investors will underwrite.

- CHIPS + ENERGYFinland orders Google to stop clearing forest for two AI data centers
Finland's supervisory agency ordered Google's local unit to halt work at its Muhos and Kajaani sites until environmental reviews are done. More than 300 hectares of forest had already been cleared, and the stop must take effect by October 23. Google said it had "fallen short of our own high standards." Chips and power aren't the only bottlenecks for AI buildouts anymore. Permits are too.

- DIGITAL MEDIATikTok gave some users a feed reset that did nothing, New York alleges
Newly unsealed filings in New York's lawsuit say TikTok ran placebo tests in 2023. Thousands of users, teens included, tapped Algo Refresh to reset their feed and got a version that didn't work, while TikTok compared their time spent and ad revenue against users who got the real one. TikTok says it regularly tests features, like most companies. Feed controls are becoming courtroom evidence.

On Thursday, ESMA, the EU's markets regulator, told licensed crypto firms to stop offering any service around stablecoins that don't meet MiCA, the EU's crypto rulebook. That covers trading, transfers and even custody. Leftover customer holdings have to be cleaned up within three months, which lands around January 8. Firms can still help clients sell, convert or withdraw, but nobody gets to buy more.
The opinion names no coins. It doesn't need to. Tether's USDT, the biggest stablecoin at about $184 billion, has never been authorized in the EU. The quiet detail: a warning label or a customer click-through doesn't fix it, so exchanges can't keep USDT around by making clients tick a box. The same week, Samsung picked USDC for its wallet.
Why watch itA stablecoin's license now decides where its dollars can flow. Watch whether EU trading volume moves to USDC and euro coins before January.

GPT-6 now answers with working tools: calculators, forms and charts. See what your audience can make for free. Open ChatGPT, paste the prompt below and fill in the brackets with your real business.
I run [my business, e.g. a pricing-template shop for freelance designers] and my audience is [who they are]. Build me an interactive tool, right here in the chat, that solves the most common calculation or decision my audience faces, such as [example: what to charge for a logo project]. Give it inputs they can change and a clear result. Then, separately, tell me: 1) three things this free tool can't do that a paid product could (for example saved history, real market data, expert judgment, done-for-you templates), 2) one paid product I could build around those gaps, and 3) a one-line headline to sell it.
You'll get a working demo of what ChatGPT now gives away, plus the gaps where buyers still need you. If the free version covers everything you sell, that's your early warning.
Q. What's "annualized revenue," and how can one company's be $50 billion or $70 billion?
Annualized revenue, or run rate, takes a recent month and multiplies it by 12. Make $10,000 last month and your run rate is $120,000 a year. It's handy for a fast-growing business, because last year's total is already stale. It's also generous: one big month makes a big number.
The second question is what counts as revenue. OpenAI counts only its cut of sales made through cloud partners. Anthropic counts the full sale. Same kind of business, different rulers, and that's how a figure reported at $70 billion became about $50 billion this week.
For your own business, say which number you mean. Gross is everything customers paid. Net is what's left after the marketplace, the payment processor and refunds take their share. Anyone buying or backing a digital business will ask for the bank statements, and those only show net.
